A while ago my buddy gave me some Finntroll music, and I really like it.
What do you guys think of them?
I really like them, but from what I've seen on this forum so far it seems to me that people rate them as almost "too much" in the way of evilness.
My take on it is that since I don't speak or understand Finnish, it doesn't matter. I can't tell what they're saying, so it doesn't affect me. Am I right?
BTW, Finntroll is a great band to listen to when studying or working.....as long as you're not Finnish:) I've noticed that it's sort of "ambient" since their words go right through my head and don't catch my attention like my English-language music does.
Do any of you guys feel the same way?
PMZ
PS-Another two bands that work for me this way are In Extremo and Subway to Sally. Do you guys (and gals) like them?

Almost too much in evilness? They're just silly and fun. This is drinking music for the country.

Finntroll is anti-Christian black metal, believe me!The lyrics are in Swedish, not Finnish, and they are so evil I immediately stopped listening to them. But they were one of my fav bands:( I can send you English translation of their lyrics, you will be very surprised.)Have you seen the video clip of Trollhammaren?Well, that's not about happy feasting, but an angry cry to slay Christians.Forget them, I advise.Check out Korpiklaani instead.
In extremo is very good, and have Christian-friendly lyrics.Others told me that Subway to Sally also speaks negative about Christianity.

Yes, but they aren't a "serious" band in my opinion, and they aren't a black metal band. I'm not being elitist. They aren't black metal. They just have upper register vocals.

Trollhammaren = The Trollhammer
Among shadows rides a beast.
Like a black tree.
Grips tightly on a mighty hammer.
Out for weak Christian blood.
TROLLHAMMER!
TROLLHAMMER!
The Trollhammer sweeps again!
Cut down, brother again!
Hear the last shout -
The Trollhammer is here!
TROLLHAMMER!
He is not a human.
Not fragile and weak like you.
You will be powerless.
No eyes see your end.
TROLLHAMMER!
TROLLHAMMER!
Since the darkness overtook.
It is afraid of the frost's cold fingers.
That take hold and kill.
Under the coming winter night.
TROLLHAMMER!
TROLLHAMMER!
TROLLHAMMER!
TROLLHAMMER!
Människopesten = The Human Pest/Plague
The plague came from the South.
A thousand years ago.
Rats of the false faith.
Corpses and death.
With souls so black.
As the nightly sky.
We chase them away.
Every time.
We fight 'til dawn.
When every troll has fallen.
The Human Plague.
Has no place here.
The ground is colored red.
By Christian scum.
Let the bloodbath begin:
DIE, HUMAN PLAGUE! (=*the* human pest/plague)
With blood and fire.
Are we baptized.
Ice and iron.
Created our cradle.
We ride with wolves.
To the fight again.
Human flesh.
It tastes the most.
The ground is colored red.
By Christian scum.
Let the bloodbath begin:
DIE, HUMAN PLAGUE!
With blood and fire.
We cut them down.
Shining blades.
Quench their thirst.
The human plague...has no place here.
The human plague...shall be ripped apart.
Well, if not black metal, but they are anti-Christians.

I've noticed the "christian" metaphores and references like in Kneel To the Cross, but i haven't found anything directly against christianity. As far as I know, free masonry is build on christian values, but with a somewhat twisted view. Do you have any specific examples from their lyrics?

fyi, Kneel to the Cross is a cover song.
Also, Freemasonry is just a glorified boy scouts group (although they accept women now). They require that you believe in a god; doesn't matter what it is. And they are not a secret society; they have all sorts of websites, and recently on the History Channel, their induction ceremony for new members was broadcast. I am getting really sick of all the baseless controversy surrounding Freemasonry. I wish people would actually look into it more instead of blindly condemning it (not saying that you are, but it's something that many people do).

So according to what I have read here, trolls hate and kill Christians?
well (tangent warning here) referring to Metalocalypse again - 'kay there's the grocery store Finntroll's in the first episode.
Then when they are supposed to apologize to the people of Finland, they write that song that summons a huge troll (so funny that Hetfield was its voice!)
was that supposed to be a finntroll that came out of the lake? cause it was a troll, and they were in Finland.
just wondering.
anywho it looked more like a demon than a troll. at least the trolls I heard/read about I thought were sort of like evil dwarves, not towering horned things!
Pzig86
02-14-2007, 09:30 PM
Well, you'd have to agree that trolls have traditionally been ascribed the status of "evil bums who live under bridges and eat passers-by."
Wouldn't it make sense for the band to assume that trolls would hate Christians?

at the lower levels of masonry you point may have validity, but higher levels of which a few of my relatives have be initiated into it is very occultic, the blood oaths and generational curses are real. My grandfather who leftve the lodge and was once a grand master detailed ceremonies and oaths they took. Very scary stuff. So i will condemn it as I have seen its fruit. I think more people should pull their head out of their asses and stop liberally accepting every cult in the name of tolerance.

There is no concrete proof of any occultic involvement.

Proof? We might be able to infer from the fact that Thelemic organizations like The Golden Dawn and the O.T.O. are recognized as having very much in common with Freemasonry. P.S. There's an official chapter of the O.T.O in my town. Very interesting. I stumbled upon them by chance.

I am, of course going to take seriously the lines that talk about trolls eating preists. Of course.

I stopped tthinking thier even anti-christian. Atleast bands that are try to argue thier point instead of saying "trolls lets go eat christian preists"...ummmm, ok? Two strokes of a pen and thier songs wouldn't even be "anti-christian".

I mean, if it bothers you don't listen to it. But I listen to napalm death, brutal truth, kreator, etc. They say "We seriously question religion, it's effect on society and the suffering we have seen it cause." If you lived in Sweden or Finland you would be very used to this kind of pagan stuff. But I wouldn't try to convince anyone to listen to it, like oh it's ok for me so it should be for you. It is all a matter of what you are comfortable with.. One comfort level isn't better than another. I am used to hearing pagan folklore and I don't feel influenced by it or that I am glorifiying anything evil by listening to the music. I don't regard Finntroll as heroes, I am not even a big fan of their music. I used to like it quite a bit but now it's kind of boring to me. The new Ensiferum is much more suitable to my current tastes.

Well, anti-christian and satanic lyrics just go in one ear and out the other with me, so I'm not influenced by them at all. Anywayz, these lyrics do seem like they are sung from the point of view of trolls, and the band members even are in character as trolls. Check out their personal bios on their website. Meh.
I used to like Finntroll a lot more than I do now. It wasn't the lyrics that got to me in the end... it was the fact that approximately 90% of their songs were incredibly boring, and the 10% that weren't boring all sounded alike anyway... just overly fast speed/thrash with too-loud drums, raspy vocals and silly polka keyboards. *yawn*
These days if I want metal like that I just listen to Korpiklaani.
