I'm thinking of picking up the bass. Does anyone have any suggestions about what bass I should get?

Bass is a funny word.

I could probably spend up to $300

I would get a used Fender Standard Precision or Jazz bass.

it is all on about money. A fender P bass would be a great start. If you have never played before it is not a good idea to squander all your cash on something you have not truly decided to want to play.....

If you're just looking at starting out, go with something cheap. $300 is a doable amount - but I'd spend as much as I could, since most of them are going to be low-cost anyway. Keep in mind you'll also need an amp.

Sam Ash has some packages for under $300. Of the ones listed on the link below, I'd go with either the Squier or the Ibanez.

Washburn and Dean also make decent but cheap bass guitars

Get something used - that way you can get a better quality bass. If you start with something thats difficult or painful to play, you won't want to.

The Spector entry level basses are very nice - you could score a legend for 3 c notes easy on ebay. Then you'd have active electronics - and a Spector!

Personally, I would bump that $300 up a bit and get a cheaper Conklin. I can promise you, I've played numerous basses and owned at least 5 that I can remember right now and nothing else is even close.

Conklin's are very nice. :)

Mr. Conklin sometimes hangs out on the ERB forum I run....I've heard nothing but good things about him and his instruments!

Yeah... Enough good things cannot possibly be said about Conklin. When it's time for a custom bass, I'm definitely going with them again. :)

if you're starting out, get the ibanez starter pack..it's pretty good..
