and when do you know the pick is good for garbage?
I used some cheap fender picks for my bass once. I wore the pick down to half it's original size in a short 20 minute set.
now I use Jim Dunlop Tortex picks. they last me quite a while. I never really paid attention to how long they last because I usually get about a dozen icks at a time. not to mention, I lose picks at every show.

The tortex picks are amazing. I used to use tekpicks, (a hard to find brand that made steel picks,) which worked great for rhythm guitar. I still have one that's shown very little wear after 7 years of use, (besides the tip being sharp enough to cut paper.)
However, the tortex give the rigid feel I liked about steel picks, while saving a lot of wear on the strings, and still lasting forever.

the ones I use are Dunlop Jazz III (1.38 mm nylon sharp pointed pick). I can see definitely see some wear about a few practices, but I neveer know when it's time to change. Maybe when the tip becomes round, it's time to change...

I use .63 nylon picks. I think they're Dunlop. I play rhythm in a metalcore band. They baaaaaarely wear down and are pretty cheap too!

I use a Dunlop Tortex Jazz pick model H3. It's the same shape and size as the JazzIII but the tip is slightly more rounded. They are my favorite picks, extremely rigid and they last forever. They also give you a slightly brighter tone than the nylon pick.
Here's a pick of one:

I use tortex 1mms. They last a few months I guess, but I usually lose them before they lose their goodness. I've never really worn one down much more than sharpening it.

I've had this pick and liked it. My store went out of stock so I had to get a bunch of Jazz III instead. The problem I have with jazz III is that it tends to slip from my fingers after a while. The other problem is that the surfice on the side isn't flat, which gets annoying for your fingers after playing with it for a while.
Today though I picked up some dunlop Tortex black gold jazz, and they are the same as the H3, except that they come in 5 or 6 different gauges (I got a 1.0 mm one).
And about the tone, to me it sounds like the pick scrapes more on the string than a nylon pick would do, but maybe it's just me who has bad technique.

totex .88 is my fancy! When you are playing hard metal, and more you will start to hear things differently as you are playing, like you are not getting that edge, that is when I throw them away!

I usually lose them before they go bad. :P

I throw them out when the picking surface is rough and catches rather than glides across the strings. I live in Australia, so my picks have boomerang qualities. I lose them, but they always seem to come back.:)

I go thru at least one if not two Dunlop Tortex a practice, but since they cost so much i always try to reuse them at some point.
still if recording it has to be new and i have to change after about 20 minutes or so.
Hands down the greatest pick ever made are Claytons Acetal's (http://www.steveclayton.com/acetal.html) but for some reason i can never find the ones i like here locally, they are always sold out. Whenever i find the right ones, i buy everyone the store has, so that is probably why they are sold out, everyone probably does what i do.
sometime i am going to start ordering them so i have them always...

I still use cheap fender meds and thet last through playing Angel of Death about two or three times. They barely last through thirty minutes of constant abuse at 210 BPM.
