Man i am extremely happy with my Event monitors (http://www.event1.com/index/index.php)

I use the small ones, and got them used for about 250 for the pair. They are powered monitors (which i highly recommend, as i think its cleaner power for the small studio)

Dude $500 won't buy you one Mackie. Behringer is a Mackie copy check them out. Although still not a Mackie but, a decent product. I have some M-Audio's. They are not bad, I spent about $350 on them. Check out Roland's monitors to. I would go powered much easier to deal for a small home or project studio than buying amps to run them.

I hear a lot of good things about the behringers on a guitar/recording board I post on. So far they've been the only ones I've seen with an 8.75" woofer for under $500 for the pair. Here's a link to the Berhinger TRUTH active monitors:

I have no complaints about my JBL 4206's that I picked up for $300. My singer uses KRK's for mixing and recording our stuff. not sure what he paid for them.

I agree with Frost Like Ashes. I am very happy with my Event powered monitors as well. ( I am assuming you are looking for reference monitors for accurate mixing, not just "studio monitors" to act as good-sounding playback speakers in your studio.) I have also been impressed with the results I've gotten out of high-end Sony headphones when mixing, especially at lower volumes.)

yeah SB, I will be using them more for final mixing, and such things like that, not to include just normal all around play back!
