my pedals were very tight and i used the beater all the way extended. i had some speed but i knew i had more. today i lowered my beaters and loosened the springs. my beater counter weights i also lowered.
i didn't lose control, and i gained speed i knew i had.
you got any tricks with your pedals? i'd like to know them.

You know, I'd been thinking about trying this...I'm gonna go home and loosen mine up a bit tonight now too!

I know that Mark has tried playing with his feet flat against the pedal, and not play with the balls of his feet. He also brought the chair up a bit too, but you might want to ask Epidemic of Violence!

a friend of mine, who i am very jealous of, has unbelievable coordination with his feet. he plays flat. he says it give him more coordination and his calves muscle memory. i am trying it. it is pissing me off at times :D

i have been a hard head about that. i have gone thru a lot of pedal springs & i just now made a change. i feel more in control now. how you get good results, too
A drummer that I've worked with in the past would slide his feet on the pedals. hitting it down at the heel end of the pedal and then sliding his foot forward so that the pedal gets hit down again when it is rebounding. it produces a much faster double bass.
What you would hear would go like this LLRRLLRRLLRR (2 kicks from each pedal each time)
he could also make it sound as if he had double bass pedals with just a standard single pedal.

ive been watching a lot of Tim Waterson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSGWqEow5mk&mode=related&search=) on youtube and i have been paying attention. dude is bad!
TW plays heel-toe, effective to say the least. my guy was doing toe-toe, sliding his foot forward each pair of hits he did. same effect, just a different way of doing it. Really its whatever is easier for you.

double bass is a little tricky for me. i've explained this on the old FS, but i'll do it again...
i'm missing about 2/3 of my right foot. it's the front 2/3, so i have no toes. the prosthetic i wear gives the impression of a full foot. i can wear the same size shoe. anyway, i have an ankle, but the ligaments aren't as lose as my left foot(nothing i can do about that, either). so i can play single kick like i have toes, using the prosthetic(i can even pull off some doubles and triples occasionally), but on double, my left foot is way faster if i'm doing a steady beat. so my options are
1. do a slower steady beat
2. take the foot off and play using my heel
option 2 presents a whole new problem. gaining coordination between my left ankle and my right leg. i'm getting there, but it's a slow process. if anyone has any tips they think might help, please give em to me.
and i haven't been playing double that long, so i'm still working on independence between my left arm and leg. they still want to do the same thing:)
and since i'm already on the subject, i'll go ahead and say i only have the thumb and pinky on my right hand. i'm missing the knuckles for the middle three fingers as well, so that lets me close my hand very similar to a lobster. i got a reeeeeaaaally good grip.
i was born like, for all you people who want to know, but are too afraid to ask. i actually enjoy talking about. i make a lot of jokes, since there's not much i can't do. on occasion, i will throw my (prosthetic) foot at friends...or strangers. always fun:headbang:

***quick note to self: if i ever meet burningwater keep at least one eye on him so he doesn't throw one foot at me :D***

i used to play flatfoot only but about a year ago i realized i could play faster heel-up, and played heel up since
and about beater level, spring tension, i keep my springs pretty tight, ive worked my way up from low spring tension to high tension, once you gain good control with low you should go higher, thats what i did, im not really shure how you can get faster with lower spring tension, unless you mean faster with control. i keep my weights at the top, to get more punch out the beaters. what about kick drum head tunage, how tight do you keep yours? i keep mine a loose enough to get that cracking/punching sound, but tight enough to still get a tiny bit of rebound.

i use aquarian super kick heads on my bass. they sound unreal, and the play is right. like you i don't tighten mine much to get a nice lowend hit. i am thinking about tightening it up a little and loosening my pedal springs more. playing heel-toe is hard on tight springs and a short board

haha, this reminds me, i still have the same head that came with the set, wich i bought used, and it was probably a crappy 500 or less sunlite set, but the sound is pretty good considering that, oh and it has a slice in it covered over with tape, from when i first started playing, and had the beater so low, it would hit the head...haha

I tune mine quite low aswell. I recently bought a Power Double Kick Pad, which is basically a plastic disc that sticks to the bass drum skin. It ensures that both beaters move in the entire disc and sound alike. I find it adds some extra attck and punchiness, but I think one would loose the effect of a specialised (wooden...) beater.
